Benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening VS. Over-The-Counter Products
Knowing what whitening product to choose from can be difficult nowadays. Many products aim to give you a brighter smile but few live up to their claims. On the other hand, professional teeth whitening is consistent with results and offers many benefits that over-the-counter whitening products do not.
Accuracy
The strength of your whitening treatment is customized to your needs. Our dentists, Dr. Frederick Hoffer and Dr. Douglas Stilson, can control the strength of the whitening gel to ensure you reach the shade of brightness you desire.
Safety
Since our dentists can control the strength of the procedure, in-office whitening is much safer for your teeth. Also, our Opalescence Boost treatment doesn't require hot LED lamps, which can make for an uncomfortable experience.
Upfront Cost
With over-the-counter whitening products, you aren't guaranteed a noticeably whiter smile after one use. Eliminating discoloration with whitening toothpaste and strips can take months, and the price can add up, unlike our upfront cost.
Fast Results
Rather than enduring weeks or months before seeing a change in the shade of your smile, the results of professional teeth whitening are immediate. You can leave our Redlands office with a noticeably whiter smile in under an hour.
What Causes Tooth Discoloration?
Several factors can cause intrinsic and extrinsic stains to appear on your teeth. One or several of the following factors may contribute to your discoloration:
Dark Beverages and Foods
Dark beverages, like coffee, tea, and red wine, as well as pigmented foods, like beets, curries, and blueberries, can leave your teeth extrinsically stained. Drink through a straw and rinse with water after drinking or eating these products.
Tobacco Products
Smoking or chewing tobacco can cause discoloration in your teeth from nicotine and tar commonly found in these products.
Age
As we age, our enamel thins, and the yellow layer beneath, called dentin, shines through. This can make your smile discolored even with excellent dental hygiene habits.
Genetics
Some of us are born with thicker enamel than others. Thinner enamel can expose the dentin below through the enamel quicker.
Medications
Certain medications, such as some antibiotics, can cause discoloration of the teeth. These are typically intrinsic stains that won't benefit from teeth whitening.
“Dr Hoffer is the best dentist that I have ever used. I had some work done today and it was quick & painless (as usual). I highly recommend him.”
