A Custom Oral Appliance Can Effectively Treat Sleep Apnea

Like many patients, you may suffer from sleep apnea. This condition causes your breathing to cease during the night, continually disrupting sleep. Fortunately, our dentists can effectively treat the cause of your symptoms with advanced sleep apnea treatment at our Redlands, CA, office. At Redlands Family Dentistry, we proudly offer non-invasive treatment with an oral appliance, which will open up your airways while you sleep. In turn, you can enjoy a full night’s rest, can feel well-rested and healthier, and will be less at risk for several serious health conditions and concerns.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is by far the most common form of sleep apnea, and our dentists often provide effective, non-invasive treatment for this condition at our practice. If you suffer from OSA, your soft palate or throat can droop while you are sleeping. In other cases, your tongue may fall back into your throat. The soft tissues will block airflow partially, which can cause loud snoring and difficult breathing. When your airway is blocked completely, breathing ceases entirely, and your brain will signal you to wake up to resume breathing. With the constant interruptions to your sleep, you may suffer from a number of different symptoms, including:

  • Chronic exhaustion and daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty focusing or decreased cognitive skills
  • Forgetfulness
  • Mood swings, irritability, and difficulties with personal relationships
  • Chronic headaches
  • Sore throat and headaches, especially in the mornings

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is a different, though related, condition. If you have CSA, your brain does not send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. As a result, you will stop breathing and wake up multiple times each night. Because central sleep apnea is nerve-related condition, you will need treatment from a neurologist or similar specialist.

Why Sleep Apnea Treatment Is Important

Sleep apnea treatment can protect your overall health.  If you are suffering from the symptoms of OSA, you should seek appropriate care as soon as possible. If you suffer from OSA, you also face a higher risk for several serious conditions, such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke

Fortunately, our treatment can reduce these risks and can even extend your life.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

At Redlands Family Dentistry, we use the Moses® appliance to treat sleep apnea. Not too long ago, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, was the standard treatment for sleep apnea. The machine would blow a steady stream of air to keep airways open. However, many patients found it difficult – if not impossible – to sleep with this bulky, noisy device. The Moses® appliance is non-invasive and far more comfortable than this older treatment method.  This custom-made appliance will fit over your top and bottom molars. Thanks to its special design, the device will gently shift your lower jaw forward to open your airways. You can adjust the appliance, as needed, to achieve the right degree of change. In addition, the Moses® appliance can reposition your tongue, keeping it clear of your throat.

Our treatment can reduce the risks of sleep apnea and can even extend your life.
